Cycles Ed, ASR & Zanfel Reroute Trails at Scout Camp

Bill Swann - Sunday, January 15, 2012

Cycles Ed, ASR and Zanfel - it was combination that along with 3 ASR members: Marianne Swann, Daniel Rodriguez and Bill Swann completed 3 major reroutes of the trails at the Scout Camp. Anyone familiar with the trails out there would have no problem remembering - probably with some amount of pain, the three sections that were reclaimed. All three were in great need of some R&R as they had become nothing less than fall line trails. Cycles Ed (above showing to be the first recipient of our Zanfel product - and very happy - as you can see - to have it ready to go when needed) did a great job in picking out new lines to replace the previous sections. For more photos for the day, just go to our Photo Gallery and open the Trail Care Team folder.

More trail work is planned and hopefully we'll be opening it to other trail workers to come out and help, so keep your eyes and ears out for that opportunity.

As usual - big thanks to Cycles Ed Jones for his continuing hard - yet passionate - work on the trails at the Scout Camp!

Richmond ASR Team Trail Day - January 14th, 2012

Marianne Swann - Sunday, January 08, 2012

Team,
Great to see everyone who attended the Team banquet on Saturday evening!!
Thanks so much to Phil and Lisa for hosting us again this year.

Just wanted to bring you up to speed on our Team Trail Days and agenda for Spring 2012.
Our team philosophy remains the same as always, to give back to the community and trails that we all love and use.
With that said, your race and trail work volunteer time is always welcome and appreciated towards your individual requirements for race reimbursement.
Team Trails Day will grant you double the hours worked towards that same individual requirement for race reimbursement.
Keep in mind that your individual requirements are as follows:
20 hours of trail work
10 hours of volunteer time
Make sure to report your hours immediately following the event to: mswann@richmondasr.com

Our Team Trail Days for Spring 2012 will be focusing on Camp Brady Saunders (Scout Camp), working along with Ed Jones.
Our first team day is this coming Saturday, January 14th.
I will get back with you later this week with the details.

Our remaining Team Trail days for Spring 2012 are as follows:
February 11th
March 10th

Thanks in advance and looking forward to seeing everyone on the trails!!

Scout Camp - Trail Work August 13, 2011

Bill Swann - Sunday, August 14, 2011
A hearty group of trail workers gathered under the guiding hand of Cycles Ed to move the scout camp trail closer to putting rubber to the dirt. Marianne and Bill Swann from ASR were present with what Ed & Jody said was the biggest group so this summer.
A number of tasks were completed - the western section was cleared from overhanging limbs and debris and is ready to ride. Ed also sent out a small crew to clear a 3 mile section on the eastern side. Jody and her partner also cleared a big section. Ed and Pete continued work on the WAG (section dedicated to injured rider and trail worker, Wayne Goodman) - as you can see below, this section is almost complete and should provide challenge and fun for the riders as they grind it out!
Thanks to all who came out and worked and big thanks to Ed and Jody for all their work!

Marianne and friend pose at the top run of the WAG trail.

A look down the trail from near the top.

Looking up at the next section to be completed.

Richmond ASR Trail Days - Fall 2010/Spring 2011

Marianne Swann - Sunday, September 12, 2010

Team,

It’s that time of year once again, the race season is waning, it’s time to haul out the picks and shovels.

Our trails are in need of some TLC and Richmond ASR is on board to tend to those needs.

As you know, we are a team committed not only to our sport but to giving back to our community.

That said, we are once again lined up to provide community service in the form of trail building/maintenance and special projects.

We hope to be doing projects with the following: Clark Jones (Richmond MORE), Nathan Burrell (JRP), CyclesEd

Team Trail  Days are scheduled for the second Saturday of each month starting in October 2010 and continuing through March 2011.

Team Trail Days will garner you 2x’s your worked hours towards your yearly 20 hours of trail volunteer time.

Trail work outside of team days is encouraged and will garner you the actual amount of hours worked.

Those specifics team day dates are as follows: 2nd Saturday of each month

October 9th

November 13th

December 11th

January 8th

February 12th

March 12th

**Details of Team Trail Days will be announced via email the week prior to our team day and will also be posted on the
     ASR Trail Care blog:

                    http://richmondasr.com/_blog/ASR_Trail_Care

Keep in mind that Richmond ASR follows IMBA standards and requires a total of 30 hours of volunteer time per year as part of team requirements for reimbursement.
That said, we ask that each member volunteer 10 hours by helping out at local races and/or our team sponsored races, 18 Hours Scouts Honor and The Sproute.
Here again, time worked at team sponsored races will garner you 2x’s your hours worked. (and…..we really need your help at these events!)

**Remember to submit your volunteer time immediately following the trail work/event and in this format:

  • # of hours worked
  • Date of work
  • Location of work or Name of event
  • Trail boss on site that day or Race Director

Scout Camp Trail Work

Bill Swann - Tuesday, July 13, 2010
ALWAYS  - ALWAYS - ALWAYS...
use a good strong bug repellenant when doing trail work.
Use it especially around your shoes, ankles and lower pants legs.
I almost always use it and, the one time I don't, it get a bite. I didn't even feel it but I ended up having to get on some doxicycline (antibiotics).
The bite initially itched then showed some swelling eventually turning a blotchy red then a strange brown and now its very dry and red. I believe its improving now.
My doc and I didn't think it was lyme but are treating it as such...just in case.
So, wear long pants, use bug repellant especially on your pants, lower legs, ankles and shoes.
But - get out and do some trail work...it'll make you feel good!

ASR Trail Care crew Marianne Swann, Bill Swann and Billy Moffett got out and opened up a new section of trail with the direction of Trail Boss and 18 Hours Scouts Honor founder, Cycles Ed. It was a hot day but once we were done, looking back over the work, we were excited! We worked on and finished 3 sections that will be a blast to ride.

Watch here for announcements of riding and/or working the trails at the Scout Camp!

ASR Team Trail Day, Saturday 2/13/2010 - POSTPONED - see below for additional opportunites

Marianne Swann - Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Team,

Mr. Nature must have done more than leave the toilet seat up…………Mother hasn’t been this pissed in quite some time!!

Hopefully he can redeem himself this weekend with some chocolates and maybe a red rose or two.

As a result of Mom Nature’s current mindset we are postponed for just about everything….including trailwork.

We are hoping that Pa Nature chooses the best of chocolates and roses and soften her attitude a little so we can dry out a bit.

If so, we are hoping to get back to tending the trails.

Look for more information in regards to trailwork on upcoming dates: 2/20/10 and 2/27/10.

Since the postponed date was a Team Trail Date, we will extend that opportunity to both 2/20 and 2/27.

Thanks for all you do and we hope to see you out there.

This will be a fun day planting trees in the park,  so come out and get to know your park neighbors and fellow organizations helping to make this project a reality.  This is a family friendly event so please bring the kids. We look forward to seeing you all there!
